UX Specialist
Multiply within MMI Holdings

CUA offers a great headstart in a UX career

by HFI

Tell us about your role in your current organization.

I currently hold the title of UX Specialist for Multiply – the Wellness and Rewards section – within MMI Holdings, and I’ve been in this role for 15 exciting months now! I am part of a very dynamic Digital Team. I handle the usability and experience of our Multiply website, blog and online shop. For that, I need to gather deep insights into our users and their behavior and keep up to date with this information by requesting feedback from the insights team and keeping a close eye on our analytics.

By using this information I’m able to see where we have drop-off and where our users are engaging the most, and I then use this to create an even better experience for our users. I also do the planning and wireframing of our site and app pages and meet with our users to do usability testing and gain feedback. My main goal is to craft an experience that will have our users coming back for more.

What projects are you currently working on?

I am currently working with an external design team that has been brought on board to deep dive into our current product offering. We are conducting major research and user testing and then recreating and reimagining our current offering to refresh and improve. I’m the dedicated UX Specialist to this project.

How does the CUA training help you in your day to day work?

Since I completed the CUA training, I have brought valuable skills back to the team and I am happy to share what I have learnt. By attending the training sessions and then writing the exam, I managed to compile amazing templates and craft a UX strategy that I now follow and which very closely resembles that of HFI. If not for these sessions and exam, I wouldn’t have had the knowledge to craft such a strategy and apply it successfully. The insights and know-how gained during the sessions are invaluable.

If you are just starting out in the UX field, the CUA is surely one of the courses I would recommend. You gain superior groundwork and you start off on the right foot.

How has this changed the way you communicate with your management?

There is always a lot of healthy debating around decision-making. Since I completed the training, I actually crawled out of my shell and participate actively in such discussions. I now trust my professional opinion enough to fight for it during presentation sessions and prove to business that what I am presenting to change or upgrade will work.

What about your job excites you the most?

I love working with people, and to see them use a product that we designed from scratch is amazing. Most of all, to see your hard work go live after long hours and extreme effort – that is a very satisfying feeling. Also, the company starts seeing the ROI on what they have invested in you.

What are the challenges you face in your work and how do you overcome them?

My role as a UX Specialist faces quite a few challenges. When I'm tasked to design a new product or improve on an existing one, the challenge lies in finding that perfect balanced solution between the user needs, the product design, and the business requirements. My approach is to get to the granular details of the problem and immerse myself in the design process. We have fantastic teams specializing in specific areas—data gathering, analytics, and insights. We drive digital and focus on the end-to-end journey. My main objective is to perfectly craft the digital experience and to minimize clients calling in for assistance.
Another challenge is to make the experience on our websites seamless and to create an experience with absolute minimal friction. An outside-in approach works best in such a case, i.e., understanding the consumer’s perspective and understanding their problems.

How do you see your current role changing in the next couple of years?

I see my role evolving as tech and the digital touch points evolve and get more complex. Finding the time to stay ahead of digital trends is getting tougher by the day. I am aware that VR will start to play a big role in our company and I’m currently working on gaining expertise on how to design great UX for the VR environment.
